Some statistics about the aquaculture production in EU
Production
The total aquaculture production in the EU was 1,25 million tons in 2011. Of them, 27% were marine fish, 23% freshwater fish and 50 % molluscs and crustaceans. The top produced species are Trout, Salmon, Carp, Sea Bass and Sea Bream. EU is the 8th biggest producer in the world in terms of volume.
Consumption
The average seafood consumption per year in the EU is 23,1 kg per person and 24% of this comes from aquaculture. The origin of aquaculture products consumed in the EU is 43% from EU countries and 57% from non-EU countries. Norway is the EU’s number 1 supplier of aquaculture products.
Countries
The top producing countries are Spain, France, UK, Italy, Greece and Ireland.
Companies
There are about 140000 enterprises, of which 90% are micro-companies. The sector employs about 85000 people (direct employment). The EU aquaculture follows strict rules to protect the consumers and the environment.
